7M-GTE Check Engine Light Thu, 18 March 2004 00:31 Go to previous message
Hi guys,

Back again!

Yesterday I had the Soarer in at the mechanics getting a tune-up, they told me the timing was retarded 5 degrees and they set it back to zero, and just to keep my ear out for any pinging. On the way home i let the engine warm up a bit and then put my foot into it to see how it went, the engine revved hard up until around 4 grand or so, then completely cut out (as if i'd turned the car off and on really quickly) and then just kept on revving and changed gear (auto box) The check engine light came on when it did this and then went off a few seconds later. This has happened 3 times since getting it back, usually only when accelerating from a standing start in first gear

Now to add some more confusion to the problem, the car used to do a similar thing before i took it into them... even at idle it would be sitting there and then seem to just drop out, and return within half a second just as the problem above states.... no check engine light would appear though. This could happen at ANY time, can't narrow it down.

To remedy this problem which i beleive to be electrical (while fixing a blown head gasket) I changed all of the plugs but haven't gotten around to changing the leads yet

Anyone have any idea whatsoever?? I have a feeling that since changing the timing the car might be detonating when under high load (can't hear any pinging though) but then the fact that the car used to just cut in and out when just idling previously rules this fact out in my mind

The other question I have is that if my car was retarded 5 desgrees previously and then set back to zero would this cause an issue? Is the 7M supposed to be retarded to run normally??

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i'm sure a mechanic would need it for weeks to get any idea

Dan
