screwed computer monitor display question (hard n longish)

Hey,
i tried running my comptuer through my tv for fun, but now my display size on my monitor is the same size as it was on the tv (ie each icon is about an inch by an inch big on my desktop.
Here is the tricky bit, when i increase the screen resoluion, rather than the icons getting smaller (as happens on a normal monitor) the icons and the AREA of the screen actually increase in size. by size i mean that to fit what is actually being displayed youd need about 4 monitors (or a tv) to display the whole picture, only 1/4 or less of the picture will display at once on the screen.
the one dodgy thing i did is because XP isnt configured to display resolutions below 800 by 600 pixels, i when into settings and advanced then adapter, and clicked list all modes, and then applied 640*480 (tv's can only run a maxium of 640*480) then clicked ok and it displayed that resloution on the TV, which it was plugged into at the time, only problem now that i want to run my monitor again its still displaying on tv sized boudaries
so in an attempt to fix this i: changed all my display settings over and over. nothing happened
reinstalled my video card drivers, nothing happened
couldnt find my monitor drivers (but the shoulnt have changed should they? by plugging a tv in.
comptuer is running ATI RADEON 9700 and a diamond pro 17inch monitor
HELP ME!!!
i need view of my full desktop back..
