4A-GE timing prob Tue, 15 June 2004 04:00
hey ppl.

i have a JDM small port 4AGE in an AE86.
i recently almost had a heart attack when i put a timming light onto my eng to find i am running approx. 50deg BTDC.

i put the car into diag. mode and moved the dizzy back so the timming was correct (to the book, 10deg btdc t,e1 connected).
it ran crap. about 1/4 of the power and no accel at full throttle, only a bit at 1/4 throttle.

it has had idling and decceleration problems before, which seemed to lessen with the std timing.

something wierd is goin on so i checked....(at TDC)

-cam sprocket positions
-crank sprocket position.
-timming mark on pulley.
-distributor rotor position.
- no.1 piston position.

all of these checked out ok. so i now have no idea what could cause this.
before installation of the motor i changed the timing belt but it went back exactly how it should. as far as i know the motor is standard, but coming from jap who knows!

the motor has never pinged. and i also noticed from idle, when i would open the throttle quickly it would retard alot(in a split second) before advancing,
if anyone can make sense of this i would be greatly appreciative for any help.
cheers,
jono
