Remote engine start car alarms? how do they work?

I just purchased an alarm system from ebay that has the remote engine start feature. I have never installed an alarm with this feature before and am unsure how it works. My understanding is that the car would have to be left in nutral or else it would try and drive away? does anyone else have much of an idea?
