 Help!!! removing crank shaft pulley

ok i'm trying to take the crank shaft pulley off but how do you undo that bolt? i left it in gear with the handbrake on and as i turn it the car just keeps crawling forward up onto the bricks.
in the book it says remover the flywheel inspection plate and put a screw driver between the flywheel and starter motor but i then turn to the section on "flywheel inspection" and it says to see the flywheel you have to either remove the engine or transmission.
now what the hell can i do to get this F**ker of a bolt un done as the car is all apart and i need to get it undone soon.
