Is the first-generation Toyota MR2 a Lotus?
The first-generation MR2 was introduced during a period of close cooperation between Lotus and Toyota. The Lotus Eclat was reworked with some Toyota parts to make the Excel during this period. Toyota was also involved in design and specifcation of the M90/X100 prototype.

There are two rumors about Lotus' involvement with the MR2. The "official" rumor is that the MR2 was designed "in-house" at Toyota by Lotus suspension engineer Roger Becker. The other rumor is that the MR2 was an abandoned Lotus design (possibly the M90/X100).

According to Doc Bundy, Lotusport Esprit driver, the MR2 is the X100

Subject: Mr2 Info

The reason I'm e-mailing you is I thought you might be interested in knowing
that the MKI first generation Mr2 is actually an abandoned Lotus model that
was then sold to Toyota and redesigned for metric and mass production by
Lotus. I have the proof. The Mr2 real name is the Lotus X100. When I learned
this I called Group Lotus in England and spoke to a public relations fellow
who said he would answer my question off the record and say yes but would deny
anything out of respect for Toyota. The deal they made in 1984 was to never
divoulge any info that this was an actual Lotus(British) design for fear no
one would purchase such a vehical, British cars had major problems at the
time.

Just thought you'd like to know,

Regardless of the factualness of the above 2 links the fact is that the aw11 was definately a Toyota\Lotus co production and ohh does it show in the driving dynamics. Evil or Very Mad
