custom rims?

i've been thinking about what sort of wheels i want, scanned through lots of photos, this is one of the styles i like-
these look IDENTICAL to the wheels my dad had on his race car, i asked him where he got them, back in the day he got somebody to spin the rims for him on a lathe, got 8 spun, then welded 2 together and put thick alluminium plate in the middle with bolts around the edge...should be around $400 to get a set made!
im going to look into making them, but not sure how it would go down in todays world? anybody done something like this?
and the profile of the tyres on the sprinter looks like what im after, would they be 15/16 inch wheels?
