Trouble through carby 4K

gday, just got my 4k runnig again, but its got a 3K head on it, only problem is im not positive if no1. was at top dead centre and now i think the timing is about 20 degrees out, she will idle but it keeps popping air/fuel out the troat of the carby when i rev it, ther is not much power and i know its the timing, is the only way to get TDC with the screwdriver so i can find 0 TDC on the harmonic, and what degrees will i need to set the engine on runnig optimax, 3K head, ported so 10.5comp, standard carb/cam/exhaust what should i set the timing to?
