CV joint removal

Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone knows how to get a CV joint off (and back on again). I've heard the only way is with a big hammer, but I'm not quite sure what I'm removing.
I'm trying to make a hybrid of a couple of driveshafts using one outer CV with another assembly
Here's a pic of what I'm looking at, where should I be hitting?
Cheers,
Dave
