2t dieseling on. Sun, 13 March 2005 06:28 Go to previous message
Just recently getting my 2t in my ta23 ready for blueslipping.
I Tuned it up etc, set the idle, cleaned the points, set the points, adjusted the timing to 10 deg advanced (recomended by manual) Replaced the carby with a fresh one that had been restored, set spark plug gap.

Just after getting the car running sweet, i noticed it decided to run for about another 5 seconds after turning it off. It seems to die then re-gain its revs then die for good. Then a heap of smoke comes out of the carby. The engine hesitated to start after doing this, but when i got it to start it sounded like there was a dull noise towards the front of the engine, sort of like a knocking, but stayed constant, there was also a bit of noise that stayed constant while the knocking was occuring. I then turned the car of agen and agen trying to get it to do it again but it wouldnt, it only happens every so often.
The only thing that i think it could be is carbon build up on the pistons and in the combustion chamber. Or a faulty fuel pump.

The engine wont idle very smooth either, it idles sorta ok but not great. When driving it in first gear with no throttle it feels like i have got lumpy cams but it is an irregular jolting, if u know wat i mean.

Before fine tuning it, it would do a similar thing when the car was running, but would finish up stopping the engine without turning the key off.

I also noticed that when on ramps facing the car uphill, the engine idles much higher, but then when facing downhill the car will idle so low it causes it to stop. I jumped in my sisters Mazda 323, to see if it would do the same thing(slightly) and it didnt, probly because it is fuel injected. I think perhaps a leaking float, that gets fuel in it could be causing this.

I have lack of knowledge with engines, i am only 15 so i dont know whether these old cars change their idle when heading up hill or not.

It is only going to be my dialy driver whilst i am getting my RA28 project car sprayed and rebuilding the 18r myself. So i am not going to bother doing anything about it if it is somthing internal, such as sticking valves or heavily carbonized combustion chamber. But if it is somthing small i would prefer to fix the problem.

I have another ta23 with all the spares to swap parts over so that isnt a problem. I was thinking of swapping the fuel pump to see if that fixed the problem but i thought i would consult toymods first.

If anyone could enlighten me as to what is wrong with my car i would be very much apprecative.

Regards, Jeff
