speedo not working in 1992 4x4 hilux 2.8L desiel

hello today my speedo stopped working it has been playing up latly like not working when i first drive then it would kick in and start working, tho on the long drive today it has stopped and stayed broken i have had the cluster replaced? has anyone got any idea what it could be and where does the speedo get it info from? is it a calble or elec sensor from the gearbox if so does anyone know which one it is?
