HELP!?? linux config's - server/emails/permissions

So... hoping some of y'all are at work and know stuff!
I'm having "dependancy" and other related troubles configuring my server (Turbolinux Server 8 on a P166 ) to allow other-than-r00t email permissions, I am now TOTALLY lost in "sendmail" configs, and loaded "automake" to hopefully help which then told me it needed "autoconfig" to finish building,... all of this to build "Courier" email server so Matt and others can actually EMAIL Toyota Tuner Magazine......
whew!
so if anyone has a clue, PLEASE lead me down the proverbial path.....

P.S. - I *can* email out as r00t, just don't want to.
P.P.S. - I'll build you a limited permission ID on the server so you can surf around the FS if it'll help.
tx ahead of time!

damn near identical AFAIK
nice Avatar too...
I have been teaching myself Sysadmin, (with some success) since I cannot afford school - but EVERYTHING for Linux/Unix is so damn cryptic, requiring an understanding of meanings and commands as a prerequisite!
damnit.
I spent too long in DOS.....

I'm going back a few years now but,
Do you need to change permissions?
Or don't you have rights to do what you want to do

SORRY! I nodded off while waiting for replies! lmao
I can change permissions for folders and some events, I just seem stuck in getting permissions for users to access email!
As I mentioned - r00t has email "trust" and I added users into the config file as I understand it (Tr00t, Tuser1, Tuser2) but to no avail.
I also tried Webmin in another distro (Mandrake) and got thoroughly confused trying to sort out exactly what I was doing - since to *me* it seems that Linux "howtos" assume you already know how to use every command!
It took me far too long to even sort out "chmod" and "chown" since the helps and mans assume you understand all the comandline switches mean. And how they work.
Sort of like help will say "chmod <switch> <modify> <user>" rather than saying "chmod -r will cause the comand to be recursive"
I think I need to find a "Linux for dummies" type beginner book....

oki here's the plan;
I'm of to the dentist then on the hiway to visit family for Xmash, so I'm going to load up Webmin from the Distro CD, and see if I can make more sense of ti this time lol.
I have the server set to severely limit the Telnet-ability even in SU so I'm not sure if I'll be able to telnet in, su, and run Webmin, but I'll check forums from remote and let you know if I've made any gains! wheeeeeee
Also - I regularily hang out in #linuxhelp on Undernet IRC, but for whatever reason "ChatZilla" (part of the Mozilla Linux project) K-Lines me when I try to log in... damnit.
I fried the Windows box so I'm surfing from the server! Lotsa fun since I kept the server stripped of all the toys, and it's PIG SLOW when runnin X!!!!!! lmao. k. later.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've actually ordered an RH9 book, so hopefully when (if) it arrives, I'll be be able to get web/mail and file/print working properly. Might even put together a web-page detailing some of the basic config stuff as I go along.
*puts special "pipe-dreaming" hat on*
Good luck with it. Oh, and Merry Christmas to you and yours! (and the rest of the Toymods crew).

Thanks!
And HOHOHO to you and yours!
Mebbe we should get together and co-author a freakin BOOK! make some $$$
I've managed to build a true 'Nix webserver, FTPd and alla that, but I'm stymied on some of the finer points....
BTW - aside from *good luck* to you, there's a "Ver 10" of RH called something else - If you have the CPU to run it, it's apparently more user-friendly than even Mandrake!
I might switch to another distro if my deal for a Poweredge comes through! (used, $400CDN)

*laughs* We have more in common than you'd think. The server I'm referring to is, of all things, a Poweredge 6100, complete with 4 Pentium Pro 200 CPUs, 1Gb of memory and hardware RAID.
BTW, the new RH distro to which you refer is called Fedora - only problem is that they "sell" support packages as part of the bundle; quite expensive, I'm led to believe...

yup
little Poweredge 'junior' methinks - word from a friend ... dual P3-400's, 4 SCSI RAID 10's etc... not sure if it's blade or tower but I don't really care - I just would prefer to be able to run X-based apps in realtime instead of wait-time like I do now hehe
I see "itplanet" in your sig... you IT? As I mentioned I'm self-taught from coax-up, but mostly DOS since the 80's.
I can make a Win or DOS box dance, but I'm boggled by Linux until I get an ENGLISH explanation of what to do.
I've managed to find some things I should be doing, Cool1 mentioned Webmin, and I have it installed but still trying to access it (have it runing as Daemon by default ) so............. ?

Again, like you I cut my teeth on DOS and Win3.X, and have gone through the MS apps over the years (MCSE in NT4.0). After that, I couldn't be bothered giving money to the certifiers, and decided that a change of career path was/is in order...You'll notice the Millennium Mortgage Services banner when browsing around the forums; that is our "change of career". We've been doing it part-time up to now. As of 1st of Jan 2004 we are doing it full-time.
As for web-min, you are using the URL http://"linux-box":10000, yes?
If it isn't working, make sure you open up UDP port 10000 in your firewall (assuming you're running one).
Cheers,
Michael

Fedora sux0rz!! Stay well away from it! Use RedHat9 instead. Or if you're brave, try Gentoo.
I've never encountered your email problem before and suspect it's a TurboLinux thing. Is there an email group? If so stick your user in that group by editing /etc/group
Restarting sendmail after every change would help too 'coz you never know what changes will get picked up or not.

You know, I'm searching up a *real* how-to on config's for TurboLinux 8
I set the "default"" to "most secure" then open what I need, but there are differences in how the version 8 does things!
Like not IPchains but IPrules (new stuff to learn) and many other changes. I will try to add rule to "group:mail" then add users to it, but I think I need some sort of printed media hehe - the online stuff is rather...vague.
In other news - HoHoHo, happy holidays, enjoy the New Year (unless yer waiting a while...lol) and thanks for the suggestions so far!
