15 year rule cut off official date - for real now

just got this.. I am sure some others of you have also..
"It appears that the changes to the 15 year old import rule are finally going to happen according to information received today from the office of Hon Jim Lloyd MP. The continuation of the 15 year old scheme has exceeded most people`s estimated timeframe since the announcement was made in early February that the laws would change. Although there has been a lot of rumour about such changes, J-Spec now has information directly from the Minister`s office that they are aiming for the changes to be entered onto the Federal Register (Gazette) in the second or third week of May.
For those who have still not taken advantage of this last opportunity yet but still wish to import a good 1989 - 1990 model car at at a low price, you now know how much time is left. As has always been the case, J-Spec will accept new clients who wish to look for 15 year old vehicles, and we will be offering a full refund if we can`t find a suitable car before the laws change.
If you have any further questions about the specifics or implications of this latest news, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Regards,
The J-Spec Imports Team

I just realised that car import businesses are now going to lose a lot of money due to the new rule. Just think of all the more common and popular imports you see around that can no longer be brought in....spewing

cheap rx7s, silvias, 180s, skylines, 300zx, mx5s, supras, the list goes one.
now, they'll be importing skylines, silvias and supras the old fashion way..
It's pretty crap.

JSPEC SUCK'S
AND I SAY AGAIN.. JSPEC IMPORTS SUCK..
SORRY but i imported my car with them and they were the worst company EVER...
the supposid $1000 service fee wher they do the work... no.. cause they were giving me wrong information and not doing anythin 2 get my car here i had 2 call melbourne (im in syd) sooooo many times each day to see whats happengin with shipment etc tax etc etc...
they wasted so much of my time when a car should normally take at most 2 months 2 get here.. mine took a good 4-5 months..
also the price they put down 4 the car was wrong and i had 2 pay more etc etc
so many things.. i can keep goin if u wish but i wont..

You can still import pre 1989 cars. Just not 1989-1990 cars.

Excellent! It means that Toytotas best cars - those made in the 70's - can be imported without much hassle.

ken oath they are!!!
300,000 yen is average for any 70's celica..... ($3750) - plus around $2k for shipping, $1k service fee to your importing dude, $1.5k compliance mods, and then $1k rego.... you have a $10k celica.....

Hi,
Yeah, I know they aren't cheap. But they are getting rare and I'd expect to pay a bit for one in good condition. However, I was under the impression that due to their age that they do not have to comply to all current standards.
The whole point of importing a classic is to keep it that way - not to have it modded to new compliances that would spoil its classicness.
Also, I am told the TA22 is the most expensive Celica to buy.

the main problem is that people tend to replace their cars every 4 years or so and the ones who keep the classic cars keep them in top notch condition (ie they will demand big $ to part with them which is half the reason why hatch roku`s go for big bucks at auctions). You dont get junkers driving arround the streets that you can buy for $500 and do up and grandmas tend not to drive in japan.
I saw a classic car lot near up garage the other day where 240z`s were going for 1.5million yen and a ke20 levin was similarly priced.

river,
yes that is the idea of the 1989 free import rule... but there are still some basic ADRs which have to be met which Jap cars dont meet. The main (most expensive) being side intrusion bars.... of course if you have spare aussie doors this isnt an issue ... but there are other things like baby bolts, retracting seat belts, etc etc etc

Someone once told me that when the car is complianced they badge it as an 2005 build car...
It sounds bloody retarded to me, But could this be why? The cars cant meet 2005 emission standards???

Karl, did your Crown have to have side intrusion bars fitted?
I guess that means the Celsior won't either! grr of course

How do you guys read the Yahoo Japan auctions? do you use babelfish or something?
so basically a car built at the end in 1989 cannot under any circumstances be imported until next year is that right?
how can they control that?
What happens if I want to buy an MZ20 soarer? do i just have to get one already over in Australia?
another consequence I can see is that import prices over here will rise because you can't get any more in. like S13's etc will start to cost more due to the fact you can't get them in..

I imported my own GT4 (through a Japanese Exporter, as different form an Australian Importer, thus I did al the leg work in AUS.)
and your figures are close
Shipping was $1057.89AUD via NKY Line shipping
Shipping insurance is ~0.5% of the cars value (0.4225% for me )
My vendor fee was $650AUD (see http://www.grahamberry2.co.jp/ these guys gave me absolutly no hassel, very friendly and very prompt replys)
~700AUD in crap that needs to be done in Japan (degas, derego, dock transport/storage, auction fee, etc...)
And lastly don't forget that the Liberal pussy government will ram the TAX pole so far up your arse when it arrives. $1,400in GST/DUTY (they tax you on all services rendered in Japan, FREE TRADE MY ARSE)
Cheers
Jordan
